In October 2013, The Walt Disney Company agreed to pay for Paramount Pictures' financing and distribution fees of around $115 million for the film after Paramount reportedly lost about $140 million on "G.I. Joe Retaliation". In June 2014, a scene from the film was leaked online before the official trailer debuted the following month. Thor: The Dark World premiered at the Odeon Leicester Square in London on October 22, 2013 and was released internationally by Paramount Pictures on October 30 and in the United States by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on November 8, both in 3D. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $449 million worldwide. In addition, a Mandarin dubbed version was released in China on August 19, 2014. In September 2015, the film received a Chinese dub from animation studio Sunwoo Entertainment that made changes to the plot.
In order to meet the deadline for Thor: The Dark World, the script was finished by May 2013, a month before principal photography began in July 2013. For a period of time in pre-production, Marvel hired screenwriter Christopher Yost because he had written drafts for "" and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2". Due to creative differences, he was eventually let go from the project. In January 2013, director Alan Taylor had a meeting with Kevin Feige at Marvel Studios headquarters in Burbank to discuss the film. Feiges remained "very nice" but they did not discuss specific details of the story. Afterwards, Taylor received a call from Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who were hired to rewrite the screenplay based on Yost's draft and their own research of previous Thor stories from the comics. Chris Hemsworth had a minor injury during production in November 2013 when he climbed out of a helicopter harness too soon without thinking while filming a scene where he rescues Jane Foster from Svartalfheim. He recovered fully within a few days. The production budget was estimated to be between $150–200 million, although other estimates have placed it at around $170 million. When asked why the film was not shot in 3D, Feige explained that Marvel has found it "incredibly difficult" to work with 3D cameras. He further explained that the feeling of depth caused some headaches for Feige and Taylor during editing since they were more focused on the action. He also added that there are "layers of effects" because of Thor's ability to fly faster than light and thus appear in multiple places at once and that those layers had not been possible with standard 3D cameras.
